Chalmers, George, 1742-1825.
The life of Thomas Pain, with a review of his writings : particularly of Rights of man, parts first and second / by Francis Oldys, A.M. of the University of Philadelphia [pseud.].
London : Printed for J. Stockdale, 1792.
BEIN NZ 791p: Wanting pp. [iv]-v. Bound with Paine, T. Rights of man 4th ed.
A hostile account. The pseudonym was wholly fictitious, as Chalmers had no such degree, and no connection wit the University of Pennsylvania; it was evidently devised to compete with Paine's honorary degree from the same institution, as well as to lend dignity to the publication by making it appear the work of a clergyman--cf. Conway's Life of Paine, 1892, v. 1. p. xiv-xvi, 337-388. Ms. index, 4 pp.
