Date of printing inferred from presence of almanac for the years 1507-1520 (f. A2r-A8r) and the first appearance of the large (quarto) plates from Jean Pichore's workshop. Cf. Tenschert & Nettekoven. Signatures: A-O⁸ P⁴. Leaves A1, A2 and H2 are unsigned; leaf A3 is signed "a.iii."; leaf F4 is signed "f.iiii.". In gatherings B-I, the first leaf is signed with a majescule and the subsequent leaves with minuscules; gathering K is signed with minuscules throughout; gatherings L-P are signed with majescules throughout. Leaves B3 and H3 are missigned "b.ii." and "g.iii.", respectively. Cf. Tenschert & Nettekoven. Parchment quarto. Leaf B1r: 29 lines; area of text: 135 x 71 mm., within printed decorative borders (201 x 119 mm.). With signatures; without foliation or catchwords. "Use [of Rome] indicated by 'R' on the first leaf of signatures B-P."--Mortimer. Initial spaces; spaces for paragraph marks. Publisher's device of Gilles Hardouyn (Renouard 429) on leaf A1r: the rape of Deianira (120 x 78 mm.) within a 4-part architectural border of which the subjacent border contains the work's title. Decoration: 1 cut of anatomical man as skeleton (91 x 43 mm.) surrounded by 4 smaller cuts (35 x 17 mm.) depicting the humors accompanied by printed explanatory text; the whole within a 4-part architectural border (f. A1v). Tenschert & Nettekoven attribute the cuts to Jean Pichore's workshop. Decoration: 3 full-page metal-cut illustrations without borders (each ca. 200 x 125 mm.) by Jean Pichore's workshop: St. John boiled in oil (f. A8v), the arrest of Christ in Gethsemane (f. B3v), and the Annunciation (f. C1r). Cf. Tenschert & Nettekoven. Variants: Mortimer records instead on f. A8v a smaller cut of St. John with the poisoned cup within a 4-part architectural border of which the subjacent border contains a 2-line caption; this copy also lacks the "Vie de l'homme" border images (compare Renouard no. 65A). Renouard no. 65B also records only 2 cuts without borders: the arrest of Christ in Gethsemane (f. B3v) and the Annunciation (f. C1r). Decoration: 2 full-page metal-cut illustrations (each ca. 160 x 102 mm.) by Jean Pichore and his workshop: the flagellation of Christ, within a 4-part architectural border (f. D4v); the Virgin Mary with emblems of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded on 3 sides by architectural borders of which the subjacent border contains 3 lines of inset printed text (f. N4r). Decoration: 14 full-page metal-cut illustrations (1 repeated) by Jean Pichore and his workshop, the central subject (each ca. 122 x 79 mm.) surrounded by a varying assemblage of 4-part architectural borders decorated with putti, festoons and other ornaments, most with inset printed text in the subjacent border: the Church and 3 Virtues (f. B8v); Augustus and the Tiburtine sibyl (f. C8r); the Crucifixion (f. D5r); the death of the Virgin Mary (f. D6r); the Nativity (f. D7r); the annunciation of Christ's birth to the shepherds (f. E2r); the Adoration of the Magi (f. E5r); the presentation of Christ in the temple (f. E8r); the Flight into Egypt (f. F3r); the death of the Virgin Mary (repeated) (f. F7r); David ordering the death of Uriah (without text) (f. G7v); the death of Uriah (f. G8r); Lazarus and Dives (without text) (f. H8v); the raising of Lazarus (f. I1r). Decoration: 26 small cuts (1 repeated; each 32-42 x 22 mm.) of figures, primarily saints, most on criblé grounds: St. Luke the Evangelist (f. B1v); St. Matthew the Evangelist (f. B2r); St. Mark the Evangelist (f. B3r); God the Father as Salvator Mundi (f. L1r); Christ as Man of Sorrows (f. L1v); Pentecost (f. L1v); Archangel Michael with devil (f. L6r); St. John the Baptist (f. L6v); St. John the Evangelist (f. L6v); Sts. Peter and Paul (f. L7r); St. James the Greater (f. L7r); St. Stephen (f. L7v); St. Lawrence (f. L8r); St. Christopher with Christ Child (f. L8r); St. Sebastian with archer (f. M1r); St. Nicholas with 3 boys (f. M1v); St. Claudius (f. M2r); St. Anthony; (f. M4v); God the Father as Salvator Mundi (repeated) (f. M8v); the Annunciation (f. N1r). Some of these cuts reappear as border elements on other leaves. Tenschert & Nettekoven attribute 5 cuts (Sts. Luke, Matthew, and Mark, Pentecost, and the Annunciation) to Jean Pichore's workshop and the rest to the circle of the Master of the Apocalypse Rose. Decoration: text pages within a variety of decorative and historiated wood- and metal-cut borders by Jean Pichore's workshop, most printed from seven separate blocks and many with inset printed captions in French or Latin. The rectos of f. C2-I8 contain images from 2 cycles (most with captions in French): the Destruction of Jerusalem (bas-de-page) and the "Vie de l'homme," a variation on the Dance of Death (fore-edge). The rectos of f. L1-L8 contain images from a Nativity cycle with captions in French. The rectos of f. M3-M8 contain images from an Apocalypse cycle (after Dürer; cf. Tenschert & Nettekoven) with captions in Latin. Following the last printed leaf are 4 contemporary ms. leaves ruled in red, decorated with illuminated initials and line-fillers in a style similar to that in the printed text, and containing an alternate set of lessons, responsories, and versicles for Matins in the hours of the Virgin; a prayer to Jesus (also known as the Fifteen Oes) often attributed to St. Bernard; prayers to Sts.
