3Title:  Scientific objectivity and its contexts
 Creator:  Agazzi, Evandro.
Notes:  Includes bibliographical references and index. "The first part of this book is of an epistemological nature and develops an original theory of scientific objectivity, understood in a weak sense (as intersubjective agreement among the specialists) and a strong sense (as having precise concrete referents). In both cases it relies upon the adoption of operational criteria designed within the particular perspective under which any single science considers reality. The 'object' so attained has a proper ontological status, dependent on the specific character of the criteria of reference (regional ontologies). This justifies a form of scientific realism. Such perspectives are also the result of a complex cultural-historical situation. The awareness of such a 'historical determinacy' of science justifies including in the philosophy of science the problems of ethics of science, relations of science with metaphysics, and social dimensions of science that overstep the traditional restriction of the philosophy of science to an epistemology of science. It is to this 'context' that the second part of the book is devoted"--Provided by publisher.

6Title:  That noble dream: the "objectivity question" and the American historical profession
 Creator:  Novick, Peter, 1934-2012
Publication:  Cambridge University Press, Cambridge [England], 1988.
Notes:  History of Science Coll. copy has 1990 printing. History of Science Coll. copy gift of Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie. Includes bibliographical references and index. The aspiration to relate the past "as it really happened" has been the central goal of American professional historians since the late nineteenth century. In this remarkable history of the profession, Peter Novick shows how the idea and ideal of objectivity was elaborated, challenged, modified, and defended over the past century. Drawing on the unpublished correspondence as well as the published writing of hundreds of American historians, this book is a richly textured account of what American historians have thought they were doing, or ought to be doing, when they wrote history--how their principles influenced their practice and practical exigencies influenced their principles.

7Title:  Maxwell, Sutton, and the birth of color photography: a binocular study
 Creator:  Cat, Jordi.
Publication:  Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2013.
Notes:  "The 1861 collaboration between physicist James Clerk Maxwell and photographer Thomas Sutton was a landmark episode in the history of optics and photography, resulting in the famous "Tartan ribbon" image: the first permanent color photograph in history. This focused and incisive study from Maxwell scholar Jordi Cat reassesses this partnership, situating it within the histories of objectivity, experiment, and collaboration. Cat reveals that Maxwell and Sutton were closer to true partners than has commonly been assumed, and shows how their experiments illuminate the role of Victorian technology, representational practices, and modes of participation in Maxwell's natural philosophy."--Publisher website.  Creator:  Huneman, Philippe | Lambert, Gérard, 1957- | Silberstein, Marc
Notes:  Includes bibliographical references. This anthology of essays presents a sample of studies from recent philosophy of medicine addressing issues which attempt to answer very general (interdependent) questions: (a) what is a disease and what is health? (b) How do we (causally) explain diseases? (c) And how do we distinguish diseases, i.e. define classes of diseases and recognize that an instance X of disease belongs to a given class B? (d) How do we assess and choose cure/ therapy? The book is divided into three sections: classification, disease, and evidence. In general, attention is focused on statistics in medicine and epidemiology, issues in psychiatry, and connecting medicine with evolutionary biology and genetics. Many authors position the theories that they address within their historical contexts.
