14 | Title: | Vast expanses: a history of the oceans | | | Creator: | Rozwadowski, Helen M. | | | Notes: | Includes bibliographical references (pages 229-248) and index. Vast Expanses is a cultural, environmental and geopolitical history that examines the relationship between humans and oceans, reaching back across geological and evolutionary time and exploring different cultures around the globe. Our ancient connections with the sea have developed and multiplied with industrialization and globalization, a trajectory that runs counter to Western depictions of the ocean as a place remote from and immune to human influence. This book argues that knowledge about the ocean - discovered through work and play, scientific investigation, and also through the ambitions people have harboured for the sea - has played a central role in defining our relationship with this vast, trackless and opaque place. It has helped people exploit marine resources, control ocean space, extend imperial or national power, and attempt to refashion the sea into a more tractable arena for human activity. An understanding of the ocean has animated and strengthened connections between people and their seas. To comprehend this history we must address questions of how, by whom and why knowledge of the ocean was created and used, in both the past and the present; through this, we can forge a healthier relationship with the sea for the future. | | | Extent: | 268 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm. | | | Subjects: | Ocean and civilization | Ocean -- History

19 | Title: | Research priorities for assessing health effects from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill: a letter report | | | Creator: | Institute of Medicine (U.S.) Committee to Review the Federal Response to the Health Effects Associated with the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill. | | | Publication: | National Academies Press, Washington, DC, c2010. | | | Notes: | Title from PDF title page. Includes bibliographical references. At the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), a committee appointed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is tasked with providing advice to HHS on research priorities for assessing health effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The committee's recommendations are included in this report. The committee believes that it is important to study health effects from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill for three reasons: 1. To learn about the impact of oil spills on human health,2. To improve mitigation efforts, and3. To prevent adverse health effects from occurring in individuals affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and in future disasters.During its information-gathering process, the committee learned about many potential areas of research aimed at improving its understanding of the physical and behavioral health effects of oil spills. All of those areas are important. The committee evaluated the information and narrowed the list of possible research opportunities to those that it believes should be considered priorities. The committee's research priorities encompass five main areas: behavioral health, exposure assessment, seafood safety, communication, and developing a research response framework for disasters. The research priorities, summarized in Box 1, are not presented in any specific order. They address current gaps in knowledge and the order of priority will depend on further scientific review and community input. | | | Subjects: | Water Pollution, Chemical adverse effects | Petroleum adverse effects | Occupational Exposure adverse effects | Environmental Exposure adverse effects | Environmental Monitoring | Oceans and Seas | Electronic books
