 Notes:  Glass negative showing Charlie Huston (Haverford College class of 1875) and Morris Leeds (class of 1888) pulling Bessie Carter seated on a wooden sled at Mount Desert Island. A forest of slender trees lines the path and two horses are visible among the trees in the background. Carter wears a long, high-necked dress and wide brimmed hat. One of the men wears a suit jacket and both men wear hats. Mount Desert Island, the largest island off the coast of Maine, was popularized in the mid-19th century by Hudson River School painters as a nature retreat. From the late 19th century to around the 1930s the Island was a tourist destination for the social elite.

The Pocono Lake Preserve was pioneered by a group of Quakers, including Isaac Sharpless, who camped in the area in 1904. In 1908, this group bought the property from the Pocono Mountain Ice Company and designed it as a basic, rustic campground.

 Notes:  Title supplied by cataloger. Manuscript note on original envelope: 10-6-1908. Historical parade, being 225th aniv of Germantown Friends Meeting. On Germantown Ave. Film negative showing a group of soldiers marching in a parade down Germantown Avenue for the 225th anniversary of the founding of Germantown. The soldiers wear uniforms with tall hats and carry rifles over their shoulders. Spectators line the far side of the road. A line of carriages filled with people stand behind the spectators. A man on horseback and a horse-drawn carriage cross in the foreground. The original Bicentennial anniversary parade celebrated the first German immigrants to America and the first thirteen Quaker families who founded Germantown. A smaller annual holiday, German Day, began to be held in subsequent years in German-American communities.

 Notes:  Glass negative showing Matilda Knox wearing a striped dress standing on a porch at the Morris family summer home Avocado in Sea Girt, N.J. A pigeon named Flora perches on her outstretched left hand. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. By 1958 the house had been demolished. Matilda Knox was the housekeeper for the Morris family at Avocado.

 Notes:  Glass negative showing Matilda Knox standing against a wall of wooden siding at the Morris family home Avocado with a pigeon perched on her right hand. Knox is in profile and wearing a striped dress with a checkered apron and glasses. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. By 1958 the house had been demolished. Matilda Knox was the housekeeper for the Morris family at Avocado.
