1Title:  Dream anatomy
Creator:  Sappol, Michael. | National Library of Medicine (U.S.) History of Medicine Division. Exhibition Program.
Publication:  U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine, For sale by the Supt. of Docs., U.S. G.P.O, Bethesda, Md, Washington, D.C, 2006.
Notes:  "This catalogue is produced in conjunction with Dream Anatomy an exhibition about anatomy and the artistic imagination, featuring material from the collections of the National Library of Medicine." Includes bibliographical references (page 177). G.P.O. sales statement incorrect in publication. "In antiquity, the human body's internal structure was subject to speculation, fantasy, and some study, but there were few efforts to represent it in pictures. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century helped to inspire a new spectacular science of anatomy and equally spectacular visions of the body. Dream Anatomy, a lavishly illustrated new publication from the National Library of Medicine, is filled with the anatomical imagery made possible by the printing press, ranging from the detailed and informative to the beautiful, whimsical, surreal, and grotesque. This new catalogue, based on the National Library of Medicine's milestone Dream Anatomy exhibition, displays the anatomical imagination in some of its most astonishing incarnations, from the fourteenth century to present."--Publishers description.

13Title:  Visualizing disease: the art and history of pathological illustrations
 Creator:  Bertoloni Melt, Domenico
Notes:  Includes bibliographical references and index Visual anatomy books have been a staple of medical practice and study since the mid-sixteenth century. But the visual representation of diseased states followed a very different pattern from anatomy, one we are only now beginning to investigate and understand. With Visualizing Disease, Domenico Bertoloni Meli explores key questions in this domain, opening a new field of inquiry based on the analysis of a rich body of arresting and intellectually challenging images reproduced here both in black and white and in color. Starting in the Renaissance, Bertoloni Meli delves into the wide range of figures involved in the early study and representation of disease, including not just men of medicine, like anatomists, physicians, surgeons, and pathologists, but also draftsmen and engravers. Pathological preparations proved difficult to preserve and represent, and as Bertoloni Meli takes us through a number of different cases from the Renaissance to the mid-nineteenth century, we gain a new understanding of how knowledge of disease, interactions among medical men and artists, and changes in the technologies of preservation and representation of specimens interacted to slowly bring illustration into the medical world.
