 Notes:  Five "Reward of merit" slips, each in a border 5.8 x 12.1 cm., to be cut and awarded singly. Border design resembles that on a similar item, inscribed 1842, which appears in Fenn & Malpa. Rewards of merit (1994), p. [169].

2Title:  Perforated reward tickets: blue or red : this box contains 252 tickets each with a different Scripture verse

 Notes:  Blue tickets. Title and imprint from sleeve. The American Sunday-School Union was at this address from 1907 to 1962. On box: An excellent plan for rewarding attendance, punctuality, scholarship. A specified number of blue tickets are often exchanged for one of red, and after the pupil has earned a certain number of red tickets, these are exchanged for a card, motto, book, Bible, or other award. These tickets have proved to be a good incentive for memorizing Bible verses. The individual tickets, when detached from the sheet, measure 25 x 50 mm. Three cards each with 64 perforated sections folded in printed paper sleeve.

They are called castles, and were built a great many years ago when people were in the habit of taking refuge from their enemies, by fleeing into their houses. They are built very strong, and most of them now have a very ancient appearance.
