15Title:  Natural disasters, cultural responses: case studies toward a global environmental history
Creator:  Mauch, Christof. | Pfister, Christian.
Publication:  Lexington Books, Lanham, MD, c2009.
Notes:  Includes bibliographical references and index. "This collection of essays testifies to the profound impact that earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and other such events have had on humans throughout history in every part of the world. Several contributors argue that the experience of catastrophe has changed humans' behavior and perceptions over time without necessarily reducing their degree of exposure or risk. The book includes case studies from Western Europe, Scandinavia, Algeria, the Middle East, China, India, the Philippines, Argentina, Mexico, and the East Coast of the United States, ranging from the medieval through the modern period. While natural disasters occur around the globe, different cultures, societies, and regions have adopted specific methods and technologies for managing local hazards and for surviving catastrophic natural events. Indeed, how humans deal with catastrophes depends largely on social and cultural patterns, values, belief systems, political institutions, and economic structures. The roles that natural disasters play in society and the meanings they are given vary from one political and geographic space to the next. The essays collected here help us to understand not only how people across the centuries have learned to cope with disaster but also how communities in different parts of the world have developed cultural, social, and technological strategies for doing so"--P. 18Title:  Under the radar: internally displaced persons in non-camp settings
Creator:  Brookings Institution Project on Internal Displacement.
Publication:  Brookings Institution, London School of Economics, Project on Internal Displacement, Washington, DC, c2013
Notes:  "October 2013." Title from title caption (viewed on March 18, 2014). The UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Chaloka Beyani, has identified the issue of IDPs outside camps as one of the priority concerns of his mandate and in 2011 presented a report on the issue to the UN Human Rights Council which in turn built on previous work by the mandate on IDPs living outside of camps. While based on Dr. Beyani's report to the Human Rights Council, this publication is intended for a broader audience of government, humanitarian and development actors as well as the general public and expands on the issues raised in the 2011 report. Like the report to the Human Rights Council, this publication focuses on three specific issues: IDPs who live in urban contexts; IDPs and host communities; and the role of local authorities in responding to IDPs outside camps.

Text is continuous despite pagination; p. 37: "We obtained liberty fromthe Board of Health, to have access to all their proceedings on the subject of the calamity; ... Previous, however, to the publication, Judge M'Kean suggested to the editor the impropriety of publishing evidence, on which suits are pending.
