Printed annotations and index. To this uncommon edition --censured for its "nâegligence" by Brunet (Manuel, i:546)-- of d'Aubignâe's early 17th century satirical dialogues, the editor Jacob Le Duchat added more than two hundred pages of similar contemporary facetiae, including most notably the "Inventaire des livres trouvâes en la bibliotháeque de Me. Guillaume", a list of seventy imaginary titles (ii: 327-34), followed by his own "Remarques" (pp. 334-365) explaining the satirical point of most entries. He claims that his text was taken from "un vieux manuscrit tout rongâe" and that "cette Satire est du commencement du dernier siecle" (p. 334); elsewhere (i:[14-15]) he cites editions of 1604, 1602 ("moins âetendue"), and 1720, and identifies the author as a former apothecary of Louviers, and a famous buffoon at the courts of Henri IV and Louis XIII, known as Guillaume Le Marchand--although his name was attached to many anonymous piecse in his time. | | | Extent: | 2 v.
