 Notes:  Glass negative showing Wilhelm von Kaulbach's painting "The Age of the Reformation" in a frame. The painting shows a large group of people gathered around a man holding up a book. Many of the people gesture expressively and wear long robes. Kaulbach (1804-1874) was a painter that specialized in murals and frescos based in Munich. He studied under Peter von Cornelius as part of the Dusseldorf Academy. The Age of Reformation, a fresco in the Neues Museum of Berlin, represents an imagined assembly of notable people and was completed between 1847 and 1865.

 Notes:  Glass negative showing a distant view of Lucy the Elephant, a large elephant-shaped novelty structure with a small pavilion on its back designed by James V. Lafferty, Jr. (1856-1898), in Margate N.J. Houses are visible in the background. Lafferty received a patent in 1881 for animal shaped buildings, and hired architect William Free to construct an elephant-shaped building for South Atlantic City, now Margate. The building was sold in 1887 to Anton Gertzen, renamed Lucy in 1902, and remained a popular tourist site. The building housed variously a restaurant, office, cottage, and tavern. The structure was moved in the 1970’s and refurbished to remain a tourist destination into the 21st century.
