 Notes:  A series of articles by Richard Adams Locke, first published in the New York Sun, August 25-31, l835, under title "Great Astronomical Discoveries," which purported to be an account of the discovery by Sir John Herschel of human beings living on the moon, and which pretended to be reprinted from a supplement to the Edinburgh Journal of Science, which had been defunct since 1832. See Dictionary of American Biography; and F. M. O'Brien, The Story of the Sun (1918) p. 64-102 Pages [3]-45 contain an account by the compiler, William N. Griggs, of the antecedents and history of the hoax, with a memoir of Locke Originally published anonymously in 1835 as Great astronomical discoveries lately made by Sir John Herschel at the Cape of Good Hope.
