The Ruby Magic Lantern (33 x 24 cm. at its widest points when assembled) is made of tin, painted black and contains two magnifying lenses. Painted in brown across the front is the statetment: Pat. Aug 29.82. Among the nine printed items are five sheets (10 x 13 cm.) of 12 tickets each, to be cut apart and given to members of the audience, and a poster (33 x 23 cm.): Grand magic lantern exhibition! Tickets, with reserved seats only [blank], will exhibit at [blank], 188[blank] ... [blank] gen'l manager, [blank] head usher. Other printed items include an instructions sheet (25 x 15 cm.) for getting clear pictures with the magic lantern, an advertising sheet (19 x 15 cm.) for the Ruby Magic Lantern no. 2, and a 16 p. booklet (18 cm.) "Suggestions for an evening's entertainment," which contains a list of what is included with the magic lantern, directions for its use, a program for the evening, and descriptions of lantern slide sets available for purchase. The first of the three lantern slides issued by Perry Mason & Co. contains a "Welcome" image and two images from the story, "The lazy ant." The second contains portraits of five poets (Longfellow, Whittier, Bryant, Holmes, Tennyson) and the third contains four varied scenes and a "Good night" image. All are in black and white. Booklet mentions date of Longfellow's death: March, 1882.
