 Notes:  These letters, cards, and one manuscript were sent to Isabella Brown, an African-American poet from Natchez, Mississippi (there is one letter by American poet Walter Lowenfels to Brown). The items include: Letter from Hughes to Brown (1963, Mar. 20). Hughes comments that he knows Eartha Kitt and that she is "wonderful." He also says "don't ask me about Chicago, because I almost never go there" but that she can ask anything about Harlem. On verso: handwritten postscript by Hughes. HM 80590 Letter from Walter Lowenfels to Brown (1964, Mar. 5) in which he asks for copies of some of her poetry. He also states that Langston Hughes game him her address. HM 80591 Letter from Hughes to Brown (1964, Dec. 10) in which he thanks her for the gift of a pencil sharpener. HM 80592 Manuscript of article by Hughes entitled "News Before Breakfast," which was published in the New York Post. With handwritten edits by Hughes and a note: "For Isabella Brown. Concerning 'the bizarre and abstract information' you wrote about today. Langston Hughes." HM 80593 Christmas card from Hughes to Brown (1966, Dec.) with signed note. Hughes glued a picture of his face onto the tree in the picture on the card. HM 80594 Christmas card from Hughes to Brown [undated] with signed note. HM 80595 Three books that came with this gift were transferred to the Rare Book Department, January 2014, including Simple's Uncle Sam by Hughes, Ask your mama: 12 moods for jazz by Hughes, and Bootsie and others by Ollie Harrington with introduction by Hughes (all three with signed notes by Hughes to Isabella Brown).

 Notes:  The material in this collection includes: letters and cards from Helen Abbott to M. Lee Miller (HM 83539-83555); a copy of a 1942 letter from M. Lee Miller to Bart Abbott (HM 83556); a manuscript entitled "Addenda" written by M. Lee Miller (HM 83557) and a printed "In Memoriam: Joan London Miller (HM 83558). The letters are personal and detail health struggles and family issues; there is some discussion of socialist issues, Jack London, Joan London and Helen Abbott's on-going battle with the "male dominated groupies" involved with Jack London's legacy. The letters and cards are autograph and computer generated, some with envelopes.

 Notes:  The collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence related to the life and writings of Norreys Jephson O'Conor. The letters are addressed to O'Conor from a number of literary figures, most of them dating from O'Conor's stay in California between 1940-58. There are a sizeable number of carbon copies of O'Conor's letters, thus forming in many cases a complete correspondence.
