One was the Panic of 1837, which had just begun and was resulting in bank and business failures, credit restriction, drops in commodity and land prices, and increased unemployment. Biddle then turns to the growing national controversy over slavery.

 Notes:  Two poems by Mitchell published in his 1839 volume of poetry entitled Indecision, a tale of the far West. The first poem entitled "Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil" is handwritten with editorial changes by Mitchell and initialed J. K. M., Sr. on the front. The second poem "Thom's statues" is printed, possibly a proof sheet, with the last portion of the poem varying from the book's published version. This poem is initialed J. K. M. at the bottom.
