 Notes:  Copyrighted by J. T. Bowen. Originally published as plate 9 in Views of Philadelphia, and its vicinity (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier, Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838). The lithographic stones for the views were acquired by John T. Bowen and reissued in 1838 and in 1848 with hand coloring. View showing the prison built 1832-1835 after the designs of Thomas Ustick Walter at Tenth and Reed streets. A horse-drawn wagon used to carry convicts, known as a "Black Maria," travels in front of the Gothic-style building. Two men watch the carriage from near the road and two others are visible close to one of the battlement towers. The prison, which operated under a system of solitary confinement, was demolished 1968.

 Notes:  Glass negative showing Wilhelm von Kaulbach's painting "The Age of the Reformation" in a frame. The painting shows a large group of people gathered around a man holding up a book. Many of the people gesture expressively and wear long robes. Kaulbach (1804-1874) was a painter that specialized in murals and frescos based in Munich. He studied under Peter von Cornelius as part of the Dusseldorf Academy. The Age of Reformation, a fresco in the Neues Museum of Berlin, represents an imagined assembly of notable people and was completed between 1847 and 1865.

 Notes:  Title from manuscript note below image and partially supplied by cataloger. Ink-drawn portrait showing a right-profile, bust-portrait of the major Italian poet who wrote the long narrative poem "The Divine Comedy." Depicts the poet wearing a tunic, and on his head, a coife under a hood with a tippet that is also adorned with a laurel wreath. His eye is rendered statuary-like and without a pupil. The background is comprised of overlapping hatch marks. The portrait is possibly after the frontispiece portrait by Gustave Doré in his illustrated folio of the poet's work "Inferno" (1861).

 Notes:  Item mounted on front cover of empty cardboard folder. Memorandum in type to Mr. Wainwright from Henry Shaw Newman, The Old Print Shop, Inc. dated November 26, 1962 pasted on inside back cover: Dear Mr. Wainwright: Perhaps you can find a a place for the label on this old folder, now empty, alas. When it came to us some years ago it had some Kollner water colors in it, but not vehicles, as I recall. I find it interesting because of his own "ex post facto" statement. hsn/ea. Dictated but not signed by Mr. Newman. Label pasted inside front cover: Patented Jan. 21, 1901. Calligraphic label reading: A Number of Vehicles, in use about Fifty years ago; sketched at the places and in the years, as indicated on the drawings, now enlarged executed in 1865 and 1888, by Augs. Kollner, Phila. (Formerly Calligrapher in Lithography.) Most of the calligraphy is in cursive. Kollner's signature is in Gothic letters.
