3Title:  Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1814-1818
Creator:  Patterson, Robert M. (Robert Maskell), 1787-1854 | White, William, 1748-1836 | Haas, Warren J., 1924- | Nichols, Jeannette Paddock, 1890- | Westlake, Neda M. | University of Pennsylvania Trustees.
Notes:  Consists of two photocopies of letters from Robert Maskell Patterson: one dated 15 July 1814 to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, concerning discipline among the students; and one dated 29 September 1818 to the Rt. Rev. Dr. White, advising the Trustees to abandon the grammar school in order to enhance the reputation of the University. Dr. Nichols suggests that the discipline problem discussed in the 1814 letter might be something like an early "rowbottom." Dr. White, the addressee of the 1818 letter, is probably Bishop William White, the first Protestant Episcopal bishop of Philadelphia.
