 Notes:  Consists of 1 silver-gelatin print of Johannes Brahms on his deathbed, approx. 6 x 4 in. mounted on a gilt-edged board. Inscription on reverse reads, "Johannes Brahms on his deathbed. There are only three of these pictures in existence. H.C." "H.C." is probably Horatio Connell. The Library's Miscellaneous Manuscripts collection contains a letter to Horatio Connell from H. Velten that originally accompanied an etching of Brahms by W. Unger.

Hitchcock), which was later pasted onto a card together with a portrait engraving (probably of Smith); one undated letter to "Carey" in Smith's hand and signed "Carter;" one dated 9 November 1906 to C. B. Vaux; one undated letter to T. B. Aldrich; one undated letter to a Miss Lancaster; two undated letters to J. K. Bangs; and one note dated 29 January 1894 on the stationery of the Boston Athletic Association, signed by Smith both in his own name and as "Col. Carter of Cartersville."

 Notes:  The item from 1857 is an autograph letter signed by George Sand to Charles Edmond. The material from 1875 consists of an autograph ms. of George Sand's playlet "La laitière et le pot au lait (saynète)." The file also includes an undated clipping from Feuilleton du temps containing a printed version of the playlet; a 2.25x3.75-in. sepia-toned portrait photograph of Sand, dated 20 September 1875; and a letter dated 30 November 1875 from "Elz" [?] to W. H. Huntington. The letter is written on the stationery of the Conseil Municipal de Paris and may have enclosed the playlet and clipping.
