Creator:  Desmet, Christy, 1954- | Loper, Natalie | Casey, Jim (James) | Horace Howard Furness Memorial Fund | Horace Howard Furness Memorial Library (University of Pennsylvania)
Notes:  This essay collection addresses the paradox that something may at once "be" and "not be" Shakespeare. Essays discuss the fine line between "Shakespeare" and "not Shakespeare" through a number of critical lenses-- networks and pastiches, memes and echoes, texts and paratexts, celebrities and afterlives, accidents and intertexts-- and include a wide range of examples: canonical plays by Shakespeare, historical figures, celebrities, television performances and adaptations, comics, anime appropriations, science fiction novels, blockbuster films, gangster films, Shakesploitation and teen films, foreign language films, and non-Shakespearean classic films. Includes bibliographical references and index.

14Title:  Choreographing Shakespeare: dance adaptations of the plays and poems
Creator:  Klett, Elizabeth | Horace Howard Furness Memorial Library (University of Pennsylvania)
Notes:  "Choreographing Shakespeare presents a hitherto unexplored history of the choreographers and performers who have created dance adaptations of Shakespeare. Elizabeth Klett investigates forty of these works produced between 1940 and 2016 by choreographers in Britain, America, and Europe. Through examination of these productions, in genres such as ballet, modern dance, and hip-hop, this book argues that while many of these dance adaptations strive to design legible and intelligible stories and characters, they all nonetheless achieve the feat of moving beyond the Shakespearean texts to engage with musical and choreographic influences, and to celebrate the beauty of pure movement. Five chapters examine adaptations of the comedies, tragedies, late romances, and sonnets, augmented by six new interviews with contemporary choreographers, offering a rehearsal room perspective on the practical challenges that these artists tackle. Choreographing Shakespeare offers both breadth of coverage and in-depth analysis of how Shakespeare's poetic language is translated into the usually wordless medium of dance, and is essential reading for undergraduates or researchers with an interest in the connection between Shakespeare and movement"-- Includes bibliographical references and index.

15Title:  Remediating Shakespeare in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
Creator:  Marchitello, Howard | Horace Howard Furness Memorial Library (University of Pennsylvania)
Notes:  Includes bibliographical references and index. Remediating Shakespeare in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries analyzes literary remediations of Shakespeare's works, particularly those written for young readers. This book explores adaptations, revisions, and reimaginings by Lewis Theobald, the Bowdlers, the Lambs, and Mary Cowden Clarke, among others, to provide a theoretical account of the poetics and practices of remediating literary texts. Considering the interplay between the historical fascination with Shakespeare and these practices of adaptation, this book examines the endless attempt to mediate our relationship to Shakespeare. Howard Marchitello investigates the motivations behind various forms of remediation, ultimately expanding theories of literary adaptation and appropriation.
