8Title:  Mark Sfirri collection of Hedgerow Theatre Company posters, 1948-1959, undated
Creator:  Hedgerow Theatre (Organization : Rose Valley, Pa.)
Notes:  Separated materials: Mark Sfirri also donated Hedgerow Theatre School of Expression in Philadelphia, Jasper Deeter, director : fall, winter-spring terms, 1944-45, by Hedgerow Theatre (Organization : Rose Valley, Pa.) which was cataloged separately. This collection consists of ten posters advertising Hedgerow Theatre Company's seasons and repertory, dating from the 1940s to the 1950s. The posters are arranged in chronological order, as much as possible. The posters include the name of the theater, Hedgerow Theatre, and its location in Moylan, Pennsylvania, as well as telephone number. These posters, for the most part, include a drawn representation of Hedgerow Theatre, sometimes stylized, or a logo for the Theatre. Only two posters include a list of plays or performances; the remainder include instructions for writing or calling for schedules or reservations.Nearly all the posters indicate that tickets were available to be purchased in the city of Philadelphia at Gimbels and, prior to the mid 1950s, at Haly Ticket Office. Early posters also advertise special rates for students and parties. In the mid 1950s, the Company appears to have performed in the Academy of Music Foyer at Broad and Locust Streets.

12Title:  Gerald Clifford Weales writings, circa 1956-1985
 Creator:  Weales, Gerald Clifford, 1925-
Notes:  The collection consists of two separate series: drafts of published material, and unpublished material. Series I includes the typescript drafts of historical and critical monographs, such as American drama since World War II, Canned goods as caviar, and Religion in modern English drama. The draft of Weales's novel Tale for a bluebird may also be found in the series, as well as the drafts and galley proofs of the commented editions of Arthur Miller's play Death of a salesman and of the plays of William Wyckerley. This material offers insight into the genesis and writing process of those books, as well as possible evidence of intervention of external reviewers--most notably, English instructor (and Weales's wife) Nora Magid. Series II contains four unpublished plays by Weales, three of which are part of a series titled "Explorations." These typescripts allow for a better assessment of Weales's production as a writer of dramatic and fiction works.

13Title:  American theatre: a chronicle of comedy and drama, 1869-1914
Creator:  Bordman, Gerald Martin. | Charles Lee Collection (University of Pennsylvania)
Publication:  Oxford University Press, New York, 1994.
Notes:  Includes indexes. This three-volume work will accomplish for the American non-musical theatre what Bordman's American Musical Theatre did for our song-and-dance entertainments: it chronicles, in order by opening, every Broadway comedy and drama, show by show, season by season, offering a plot synopsis, principal players, and important statistics. Scenery and costumes are described where they might be of interest, and comments of the plays' contemporary critics are quoted. In many instances, extended excerpts from a play are included to give the reader a fuller understanding of its nuances and its period dialogue. Also included, and worked chronologically into the text, are details about cheap-priced, cliff-hanging melodramas, such as Bertha, the Sewing Machine Girl and His Sister's Shame, which were among America's most popular diversions in theatres catering to blue-collar playgoers until silent films drew away their audiences. Examples of shows produced and designed for places other than New York are included. This volume deals with the great expansion of American theatre after the Civil War, the careers of such prominent actors and actresses as Edwin Booth, Mrs. Fiske, the Drew and Barrymore families, the first important American playwrights like Clyde Fitch, producers like David Belasco, and the influence of foreign plays and players. This stage history, besides giving a sense of each production, touches on the literary worth of the plays, provides brief biographies of major figures, and sets all of this against the economic and social backgrounds of the time. Readers will close the book feeling they, like their parents and grandparents, have sat through performances of the shows of another era.

18Title:  William Friedberg papers, 1950-1965
 Creator:  Friedberg, William, 1916-1965
Notes:  Friedberg's work represented in this collection spans many genres, including comedy review sketches, TV dramas, short stories, plays, and musicals. The vast majority of the collection consists of typed scripts, either drafts or “shooting scripts” used for production, which Friedberg wrote or produced. Production files for some of the scripts are the second-largest group of material, including casting ideas, budgets, contracts, advertising records, and intra-staff memos. The collection also contains documents which Friedberg used in his creative process, including typed or handwritten notes and ideas for future works, and newspaper clippings that he used for inspiration. Three sketchbooks of pencil drawings are also present, which may be the work of Friedberg's wife Hope Cameron. Finally, there are a small number of family snapshots and personal papers. Other finding aids: “American Film Scripts Online (AFSO)”; “Neil Simon: Plays,” Harvard Theatre Collection, Houghton Library, Harvard University; “The Richard Hoffman Neil Simon Collection," University of Delaware.
