4 | Title: | Dr. Joseph Le Conte lectures notebook | | | Creator: | Elliott, R. W. B. (Robert Woodward Barnwell), 1840-1887 | LeConte, Joseph, 1823-1901 | Debus, Allen G. | Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History Manuscript. MS 18. | | | Notes: | Ms. Document. Script: small humanistic bookhand with cursive features. Collation: 60 pages. Layout: 2 columns (4 mm x 15 mm), 28 lines. Shelfmark: Philadelphia, PA, Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History, MS 18. This is a hardbound 19 x 25 mm notebook containing 60 pages of transcribed lecture notes on blue lined paper in both ink and pencil. The notes were taken during the lectures of Dr. Joseph Le Conte by R. W. B. Elliott in April 1860. The notebook contains notes for two separate lectures, each having its own pagination. The first set of notes are dated April 12, 1860, and pertain to a lecture on the topic of "Chemistry of the Metals." The second set of notes are undated and pertain to a lecture on botanical topics. Notebook has a few pen drawings included in the margins as well as chemical formulas written in pencil on the back flyleaf. Pages have been torn from the back of the notebook. The first set of lecture notes, pages numbered 1-34, covers topics related to the chemistry of metals, specifically copper, lead, arsenic, gold, and mercury. The second set of lecture notes appear to be missing the first two pages and begin with a page numbered 3. The notes continue to a page numbered 23 and address botanical topics including plant structure, plant nutrition, and the composition of soil. There is a brief mention of the mineral theory of German chemist Justus Freiherr von Leibig. Notebook is that of Robert Woodward Barnwell Elliott (1840-1887) who attended South Carolina College while Dr. Joseph Le Conte was a professor. Elliott graduated from South Carolina College in 1861. | | | Extent: | 1 (60 19 x 25 mm. | | | Subjects: | LeConte, Joseph, -- 1823-1901 -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Metals -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Copper -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Gold -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Lead -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Arsenic -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Plants -- Nutrition -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Soils -- Composition -- Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc | Manuscripts -- 19th century | Shelf marks (Provenance)

12 | Title: | Oral history interview with Allen G. Debus 2007 March 29 | | | Creator: | Debus, Allen G. | Bohning, James J. | Bolton Society, an Organization of Chemical Bibliophiles | Chemical Heritage Foundation | | | Notes: | Interview conducted by James J. Bohning at Debus' home Deerfield, Illinois. This oral history is part of a series initiated by the Bolton Society, an Organization of Chemical Bibliophiles at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. The Bolton Society will from time to time record and publish the oral histories of collectors of works in chemistry and the molecular sciences including the various aspects of these disciplines: engineering, technology, history, biography, bibliography, philately, etc. The person or persons selected for such an oral history need not be a member of the society. The series documents the spirit and enthusiasm of the individual's collecting interests, rather than emphasize biographical details. Allen G. Debus grew up in Evanston, a suburb to the north of Chicago, where he attended public schools. He earned a BS in chemistry, with almost enough credits for a second major in history. After working at Abbott Laboratories for about five years, Debus decided to seek a Ph.D. in the history of science, at Harvard University under I. Bernard Cohen. He accepted an assistant professorship at University of Chicago and became the first director of the Morris Fishbein Center for the Study of the History of Science and Medicine. Debus wanted to study the place of chemistry in the scientific revolution with materials available to all; to that end he has a large collection of rare books from this time period, a collection he began in the early 1940's. He says that he has about 650 such books, the earliest from 1501. | | | Extent: | digital, mp3 file. | | | Subjects: | Debus, Allen G. -- Interviews | Chemists -- Biography | Chemists -- Interviews | Historians of science -- Biography | Historians of science -- Interviews | Science -- Historiography | Chemistry -- Historiography | Oral histories | Interviews
