The Pupin lecture delivered at Columbia University on May 13, 1966, in which Rabi discusses some of the history of physics at Columbia University, and conditions there prior to the building of the Pupin Laboratory. The lecture also covers the work of Paul Dirac, Erwin Schrèodinger, and Werner Heisenberg in the 1920s; Rabi's own graduate studies at Cornell University, including the background to his dissertation and the details of the actual research; his work in Europe first with Erwin Schrèodinger, briefly with Niels Bohr, with Otto Stern and Wolfgang Pauli, and finally with Werner Heisenberg, and the atmosphere prevalent in physics at that time.
