"This catalog was designed and typeset by Bruce Kennett, and printed by Penmore Lithographers on acid-free Opus Dull, with the extra illustrations on Mohawk Superfine"--Page 23. Includes bibliographical references. "Extending the Book introduces the largely-forgotten art of extra-illustration - individually adding portraits or other illustrations to published books - and explores what this personalized form of book design reveals about the history of reading." "It includes a brief introduction to the concept of designing and creating a unique book by adding external material and an overview of the phenomenon's history and its heyday in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The works of Shakespeare - the most popular single author for extra-illustration - exemplify the practice as it changed over time." "From the beginning, extra-illustrators had to defend the "exquisite handicraft" (in the words of an 1890 proponent) against accusations of "breaking up a good book to illustrate a worse one" (in the words of an 1892 critic). This book examines the art and the practice of extra-illustration, from crudely altered books to beautiful new creations."--Jacket. | | | Extent: | 23 pages : color illustrations, facsimiles ; 30 cm | | | Subjects: | Folger Shakespeare Library -- Exhibitions | Illustrated books -- Extra-illustrated -- Exhibitions | Folger Shakespeare Library | Illustrated books Extra-illustrated | Exhibition catalogs | Exhibition catalogs

20 | Title: | A drum in one hand, a sockeye in the other: stories of indigenous food sovereignty from the Northwest Coast | | | Creator: | Coté, Charlotte (Charlotte June) | University of Washington Press | | | Publication: | University of Washington Press, Seattle, [2022] | | | Notes: | Includes bibliographical references and index. "In the dense rainforest of the west coast of Vancouver Island, the Somass River (c̓uumaas) brings sockeye salmon (miaat) into the Nuu-chah-nulth community of Tseshaht. C̓uumaas and miaat are central to the sacred food practices that have been a crucial part of the Indigenous community's efforts to enact food sovereignty, decolonize their diet, and preserve their ancestral knowledge. In A Drum in One Hand, a Sockeye in the Other, Charlotte Coté shares contemporary Nuu-chah-nulth practices of traditional food revitalization in the context of broader efforts to re-Indigenize their diets. Coté shares evocative stories of her Tseshaht community's and her own work to revitalize relationships to haum (traditional food) as a way to nurture health and wellness. As Indigenous peoples continue to face food insecurity due to ongoing inequality, environmental degradation and the Westernization of traditional diets, Coté foregrounds healing and cultural sustenance via everyday enactments of food sovereignty: berry picking, salmon fishing, and building a community garden on reclaimed residential school grounds. This book is for everyone with concerns about their health and shows how food plays a major role in physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness"-- | | | Extent: | xxi, 184 pages : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm. | | | Subjects: | Nuu-chah-nulth Indians -- Food -- Tseshaht First Nation | Food sovereignty -- British Columbia -- Port Alberni | Indigenous peoples -- Food -- British Columbia -- Port Alberni
