 Notes:  Covers the region around Chesapeake Bay and the Delmarva Peninsula in Maryland, Delaware, and northeastern Virginia. Relief shown pictorially. Oriented with north at right. Re-engraved derivative of map titled Virginia, originally published with Captain John Smith's accompanying text Map of Virginia (Oxford : Joseph Barnes, 1612). Probably unnumbered map 82 detached from volume 2 of Toonneel des aerdrycx, oft Nieuwe atlas. Amsterdam : Joan Blaeu, 1642. State 2 of copper plate map first published separately by Jodocus Hondius the younger in 1618, later revised with replacement imprint of Willem Janzoon Blaeu. Maltese crosses mark the extent of Smith's knowledge of the region; geographic details for areas beyond the crosses supplied by Indian sources, including the Powhatan Indians; see Cumming, page 77. Includes interior view of the Indian chief Powhatan in council with tribe members (11 x 9 cm): Status regis Powhatan quando prefectus Smith captivis illi daretur. Includes portrait of a member of the Sasquesahanougs tribe in native costume with bow and war club (11 x 5 cm). Two pages of Dutch letterpress text on verso (signature G, running footer West-Indien, catchword Orapa-, page 8): Virginia.
