Philosophical Hall

Philadelphia, PA 19106

Join the APS Museum for a conversation with director Andrew Ferret and author Nathaniel Popkin. They will screen a clip from their forthcoming documentary, Before Hollywood: Philadelphia and the Birth of Movies, on the history of filmmaking in Philadelphia. This documentary includes Charles Willson Peale's contributions to the history of cinema. Peale developed elaborate patriotic displays including illuminated, animated transparencies at his studio and the Philadelphia Museum. Because of their presentation, use of narrative, and spectacle, Peale's illuminated displays were the forerunner of modern-day cinema. Ferrett and Popkin will discuss and illustrate this pioneering accomplishment and its connection to Enlightenment thought and the development of the movies.

This event is FREE and open to the public, but space is limited. Please click here to register if you plan to attend.
