My project explores reproductive politics in Armenia throughout its three republics from 1918 to 2018. Existing at the crossroads of empires and institutions, Armenia, and its medical system, have been molded by outside political forces and international aid over this one hundred year period. Caught between the Ottoman Empire, the Soviet Union, and the United States as well as international organizations--reproduction has been at the center of Armenia’s political story. Women, and their bodies, come to represent both cultural continuity and national survival. By tracing obstetric care, medicalization, and attitudes towards motherhood have changed over time, I aim to show how reproductive politics have been entangled with the priorities of individuals, institutions, and imperialism.
